After getting a little bit more experience (and some feedback thank you!) with Trail Assistant, my GPT backpacking trip planner, I’ve made some updates.
Trail Assistant is now slightly less opinionated. Previously it mad some assumptions, but they ended up being more a hassle, so now it makes sure to ask about mileage preferences and food.
It has a better idea of elevation each day, just ask if you are interested.
It now looks into campsites a bit more.
More on this. A big part of planning a backpacking trip is planning your stops, and the longer the trip the more important this can be. Now it will tell you about the type of the campsite (free, needs a reservation, group camp). It also will try to figure out how busy each recommended campsite is.
Now when a popular campsite is recommended it will highlight an alternate incase that one fills up (this is common with group sites during busy periods). It will also tell you the difference in mileage so you can adjust. Lastly if it is able to find photos of the campsites it will show or link to them.
I still find myself surprised at how capable GPT4 is and how much you can do with just a chat interface and well formatted results. I think with a way to crate maps and a good source of photos there’s not a lot keeping this from being a more powerful app that stitches together the capabilities of apps like Gaia, The Dyrt or even Hip Camp. Next I need a better logo/profile pic though, the AI generated pic is really bumming me out.
